Will Keanu Reeves Return as Constantine?

Welcome Back, Readers!

Since its release in 2005, the cult classic movie Constantine has continued to capture the hearts of fans everywhere. Starring Keanu Reeves in the titular role, the supernatural thriller follows John Constantine, a man trying to save his own soul from damnation by taking on demons and other dark forces. Despite being a box office flop at the time, it has gone on to become a fan favorite over the years, with many clamoring for a sequel. Now, with recent hints from both Reeves and director Francis Lawrence, it looks like there’s a good chance that we may get just that.

Will There Be A Sequel?

The prospect of a sequel to Constantine began in 2019 when Keanu Reeves was asked about returning to the role. The actor replied that he would “absolutely” love to reprise his role as John Constantine if given the opportunity. While this wasn’t necessarily confirmation that a sequel was in the works, it certainly renewed fan interest in seeing more of Reeves’ take on DC’s occult detective.

This interest only grew when Francis Lawrence—who directed both of Reeves’ most famous roles—was interviewed about his upcoming project Red Sparrow. When asked about working with Reeves again on another project, such as Constantine 2, he said that “it’s something [he] would be open to discussing”. This statement only fueled the fire for fans looking forward to a potential sequel and kept hope alive for those who had wanted one since 2005.

What Would A Sequel Look Like?

With rumors swirling around what could potentially be included in any follow-up film, there are some pretty exciting possibilities. For starters, if there is indeed going to be an Elseworlds-style sequel set outside of DC’s main universe continuity, then this could open up many more doors than were available before—like bringing back characters who had previously died or introducing new characters not seen before in any other iteration of Constantine’s story. It could also mean that DC could explore other supernatural realms and dark forces beyond what was featured in its original adaptation of the Hellblazer comics series.

Maybe, James Gunn can find a way to add Keanu’s Constantine to the world he is building up in the DCU where many would love to see Keanu teaming up with the likes of other superheroes.

To Be Or Not To Be

Although last we heard, it was still happening; we have yet to get anything truly official from Warner Brothers. Recent hints from both actor and director suggest that we may get our wish after all sooner rather than later. Whether or not this will involve an Elseworlds-style storyline remains to be seen, but either way, fans can certainly look forward to some exciting possibilities should another chapter in this beloved franchise come to fruition!
