As always, Welcome Back, Readers!
I always feel like Science Fiction movies get a raw deal. They are usually held in a niche market where they are either a hit or fail. So I figured, let’s dive in and talk about one or two movies that had some success but are still underrated, in my opinion.
Primer (2004)
This is a low-budget film about two engineers discovering an accidental time machine in their garage. It’s a brilliant and heady movie that explores the implications of time travel, and it does so without relying on special effects or gimmicks. Primer is a unique and thought-provoking film that offers something for everyone, even those who don’t typically watch science fiction films.
Snowpiercer (2013)
Not to be confused with the TBS Television show of the same. Yes, the show occurs before the movies, or at least that’s how it started. (I never watched the show, but the film is excellent)
This sci-fi action movie set in a post-apocalyptic world follows a group of rebels fighting against the oppressive class system on a train powered by perpetual motion technology. This thought-provoking film features incredible visuals and performances from Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and Alison Pill. Snowpiercer is one of those rare science fiction films with enough depth to make you think while entertaining enough to keep you engaged throughout its runtime.
A thousand people in an iron box…
Kamikaze ’89 (1982)
Set in Berlin in 1982, this German film follows a police inspector as he attempts to uncover the mystery behind several strange events occurring in the city. Kamikaze ’89 combines sci-fi elements with drama to tell an engaging story about paranoia and conspiracy theories. The film was ahead of its time when it was released in 1982 and still stands up today as an impressive piece of genre filmmaking.
By the end, you will be whispering Fassbender!
Love Them Or Hate Them
All three of these underrated science fiction films offer something unique to fans of the genre. Whether you’re looking for something thoughtful or just some good old-fashioned entertainment, these movies will not disappoint! So if you’re looking for something different than what’s currently playing at your local theater or streaming service, check out Primer, Snowpiercer, or Kamikaze ‘89—you won’t regret it!
